I think it is important that students learn about the Civil Rights Movement because it is important to understand that not everyone in this country has had equal rights, although the founders of this nation intended so. African-Americans have had a rough history in America, from being enslaved to being segregated in the public sphere. Students who study the Civil Rights will learn about the importance of tolerance, courage as well as understand why current racial tension exist today (such as the Trayvon Martin case). The Civil Rights Movement was not just about African-Americans. Women, Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans and even those of the LGBT community fought for the chance to be recognized on an equal playing field and it's important that students learn about these movements. I think that students will be just as moved by the strength these minority groups showed during the Civil Rights Movement just as I have been.
